Arjang Davoodi, a 66 year old teacher and political prisoner, has spent 17 years behind bars in the worst conditions. But he has not been heard from for over six months. No information is available on his whereabouts, and it is unknown what has happened to him in Zabol or Zahedan prison. This has raised serious concerns about Mr. Davoodi’s health and safety.
Arjang Davoodi suffers from diabetes and heart disease, and after severe tortures, he is now unable to walk.
According to the latest news, he was detained in Zabol prison until September 2019, but there is no information available about his health and condition later than this date.
After 13 years in Bandar Abbas, Evin and Rajai Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison, the political prisoner was transferred to Zabol in September 2016, sentenced to exile. In December 2017, he was transferred to solitary confinement in Zahedan Central Prison, which is known as “Slaughterhouse” among prisoners.
The whole time, he was locked in a dark room away from other prisoners and deprived of basic essential necessities. In protest and demanding for some sun and air, he went on a hunger strike in February 2018.
At a later date in 2018, with cuffed hands and feet, the prisoner was thrown down the stairs of the second floor by Mohammad Khosravi, head of prison, and his assistant Gholamreza Ghadir, after being summoned to their office. This led to a fracture in both legs, shoulder and back injury, so that he will not be able to walk without walking aid for the rest of his life.
After being transferred to Zabol Prison, officials detained him in a single-person room, away from other inmates, deprived of any contact and basic necessities.
Arjang Davoodi has been on an indefinite hunger strike since May 21, 2019, demanding his transfer back to a political prisoner’s cell and protesting against inhumane conditions. The hunger strike could not go viral due to being quarantined.
Arjang Davoodi is one of the oldest political prisoners in Iran. Due to torture and beatings, he has partly lost his hearing and vision, and suffers from broken legs and a lumbar spine injury.
Due to being quarantined and lack of information, he has been less known in the media.
