On Saturday, May 2, 2020, Mohammad Nourizad attempted suicide in Mashhad Prison by cutting his vein.
Mrs. Fatemeh Maleki, Mohammad Nourizad’s wife, said in an interview that her husband had attempted suicide by cutting his vein, but had survived.
According to Mrs. Maleki, the political prisoner’s lawyer Mr. Maki, met with him in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad. However, Mohammad Nourizad showed up with a bandaged head and hands.
Mrs. Fatemeh Maleki says in an audio tape:
“Today in the morning, Mr. Maki, Mohammad Nourizad’s lawyer, managed to meet him, and unfortunately saw that Mr. Nourizad’s head and hands were bandaged. It seems that yesterday he cut his veins with a glass or a razor and was then taken to the dispensary ward, but he resisted and said that his comrades should see him. So he was returned to the ward and then to the dispensary ward again, where he has remained ever since.
Mr. Nourizad has heard all the messages and asked for understanding about the difficult situation they are facing in prison. Today, when Mr. Jafari, Mr. Sepehri and Mr. Khastar wanted to talk about Mr. Nourizad, their phone calls were cut off.
The prison conditions of Mr. Nourizad and others is very appalling, and I am very sorrowful about this situation.”
Three days ago, Mohammad Nourizad had threatened with his suicide in response to a prison sentence for his son. He announced: “I have decided to commit suicide in protest of the harassment of my family, and it will be announced soon.”
Mrs. Maleki quoted her husband after his suicide attempt: “My goal was to send a message about the innocence of the political prisoners and the pressure they are under.”
Mohammad Nourizad has been imprisoned in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad since July 10, 2019. He is one of the 14 who signed a letter calling on the supreme leader of Iran’s religious fascism, Khamenei’s resignation. Most of the activists who signed the mentioned letter have been arrested.
The Revolutionary Court of Mashhad sentenced Mohammad Nourizad to 15 years in prison, 3 years of exile to Izeh, and 3 years ban of movement.
