21th June 2020
According to “No to Prison – No to Execution”, Omid Hashem Zahi’s death sentence was carried out in Zahedan Prison on Wednesday morning, June 17, 2020.
The 27 years old prisoner was charged with murder. He was transferred to solitary confinement in June 15, 2020, for his death sentence to be carried out two days later.
His hanging has not been reported in any official media in Iran.
This is the 19th execution of the past month.
On June 18, Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director said: “Iran continues to execute several hundred people every year, earning the shameful spot of the second top executioner in the world.”
“No to Prison – No to Execution” condemns death sentences for any reason and under any pretext and emphasizes that it must be stopped.
Iran has the highest number of executions in proportion to its population.
According to our sources and the statistics gathered from various sources, there were 281 executions in 2019, of which 15 were women.
Since in many cases, the executions are announced to up to several months later or are not made public at all, the real figures are much higher.
