Suicide of Zahedan Prison inmate
21th June 2020
According to “Baloch Campaign activists”, an inmate of the Zahedan Central Prison committed suicide on Friday, June 17, 2020.
The 23 years old prisoner named Younes Sarhadi was imprisoned due to armed robbery.
He committed suicide by an overdose of pills.
The reason behind his suicide has yet remained unknown. What is clear, however, is that the pressure and appalling condition in Velayat-e Faqih’s prisons is beyond human capacities.
A previously published article of “No to Prison – No to Execution” reports of a prisoner who hanged himself in the Greater Tehran Prison.
Jahane Sanat Newspaper stated about the suicide rate in Iran:
“The number of suicides in the first quarter of 1399 (= 21st March to 21st June 2020) compared to the same period last year has significantly increased. The suicide rate in Iran has now increased by 23%. And the methods and statistics of these suicides are more frightening than last year. When continuously analyzed for 10 days, it was found that the suicides kept occurring in a serial manner in every part of the country.”
The prisoner’s conditions in Iran are extremely appalling and their basic human rights are not recognized and denied. Ebrahim Raisi and Ali Khamenei are responsible for prisoners who lose their lives in various ways, and they must be brought to justice.
