The death sentence of a prisoner was carried out in Karaj Central Prison.
According to reports received by the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, on Wednesday, October 28th a prisoner by the name of Ehsan Nemati was executed in Karaj Central Prison. The 41-year-old prisoner and father of two young girls was arrested in 2017 on charges of armed robbery of a bank in which one person was killed.
A reliable source said that Ehsan Nemati was taken to the gallows of his execution at least twice before his sentence was carried out. There, the rope was tied around his neck and just at the moments of struggling to gasp the air, the rope was released, and he was returned to his cell. This is a vicious way of torturing prisoners that is currently practiced in all of Iran’s prisons. In this method of torture, a prisoner is frequently executed and suffers more than the real execution.
The source added that Ehsan had lost some of his mental balance after returning from the gallows of his execution in Karaj Central Prison.
However, it is worth mentioning that on the same day of Ehsan’s execution in Karaj Central Prison, four more prisoners were also executed in Urmia Prison. Until now, his execution has not been announced by any of the state-run medias.
Thus, according to the Statistics Center of the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, at least 217 prisoners have been executed since the beginning of this year. However, the actual number is probably more than the number announced since many of the executions that take place in the medieval prisons of the Velayat-e-Faqih are not even recorded or announced at all and are carried out in secret.
Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
According to this article, no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Also, referring to Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the right to life is an inherent human right. This right must be protected by law. No person can be arbitrarily deprived of life.
Iran has the highest execution rate of its citizens in relation to its population.
According to news and statistics compiled and recorded by the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, at least 308 executions have been carried out between September 2019 and October 2020. Among this number of executions, eight were political prisoners and 16 were women. Click here to join our Telegram.
