The death sentence of a prisoner was carried out in Aligudarz Central Prison on drug-related charges.
According to the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution the death sentence was carried out in Aligudarz Central Prison, where the prisoner was sentenced to death on drug-related charges.
The name of the prisoner was Peyman Safaei, 34, from Lorestan.
As mentioned by the Human Rights Organization of Iran, he was imprisoned on charges of carrying 75 kilograms of glass drugs and was sentenced to death in the Revolutionary Court. He was the driver of the car and the drugs belonged to someone else who had embedded and hidden them in the car. Peyman told the court that the person who owned the drugs was also in his car, but he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Peyman Safaei was once transferred to solitary confinement on September 22 this year, but his death sentence was suspended for unknown reasons and he was returned to prison after 48 hours. His execution has not been announced by any state-run news agency so far.
Thus, according to the Statistics Center of the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, at least 160 prisoners have been executed since the beginning of 2020. However, it should be taken in mind that many executions taken place in the medieval prisons of Velayat-e-Faqih are not recorded or announced at all and are carried out in secret or confidential, so the actual number of executions is probably more than the number announced.
According to Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. Also, in accordance with Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the right to life is an inherent human right. This right must be protected by law. No person can be arbitrarily deprived of life.
In proportion to its population, Iran has the highest number of executions of its citizens. According to news and statistics compiled by the Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution, the number of executions between September 2019 and October 2020 was at least 308.
