Eight citizens from Gilan Province were sentenced to 48 months imprisonment despite being acquitted.
On August 12, 2021, the Human Rights Center of No to Prison, No to Execution reported that eight citizens in Gilan province were tried again in absentia by Branch 18 of the Gilan Province Court of Appeals and each was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
History of the case:
On September 28, 2020, eight citizens in Gilan province, including five women and three men who were active in political and social activities, were arrested and released after 18 days of their illegal detention on heavy bail, while committing no crime.
On December 9, 2020, all eight individuals were acquitted of the charges in a trial without the presence of a defense attorney and a jury, and a verdict of innocence was issued on February 7, 2020.
However, on March 25, 2021, the Prosecutor of Gilan province, under pressure from the Intelligence Directorate’s bailiffs, objected to the ruling, and their case was re-filed at Branch 18 of the Gilan Province Court of Appeals, without the presence of any attorney, a jury, and the defendants. Each defendant was sentenced to six months imprisonment on the charge of “cooperating with the MEK/PMOI.”
In the initial trial, the defendants, while exposing organized corruption in the regime, have announced that they will not stop fighting for freedom and social justice in Iran.
