Reports received from Evin Prison say that political prisoner, Mehdi Darini has self-immolated at Evin Prison.
The human rights center of “No to Prison-No to Execution”- On Wednesday, October 27, 2021, Mehdi Darini, imprisoned in Hall 9, Ward 8 of Evin Prison, attempted self-immolation. The political prisoner, who had served more than a third of his five-year sentence, expressed his protest with self-immolation inside the prison after several unproductive pursuits of himself and his family to take advantage of the possibility of parole. Political prisoner Mehdi Darini, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security” and “propaganda against the state,” committed self-immolation in the basement of ward 8 of the prison on Wednesday. The prisoners who witnessed the scene rescued him. He is hospitalized with superficial burns to his face, neck and body.
Mehdi Dariani, a resident of Tehran, was arrested by intelligence agents of the Tharelah Revolutionary Guards Corps on June 4, 2019 and transferred to Ward 2A in Evin Prison controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and interrogated. He was denied access to an attorney until the end of the interrogation process. During the interrogation process, Dariani was charged with “assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security” and “propaganda against the state”, and the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced him to 11 years in prison, five of which are executive.
Evin Prison is one of the most notorious prisons under the Velayat-e-Faqih rule on Iran. The human rights center of “No to prison- No to execution” calls on all international human rights organization to make this regime to open its prisons to international humanitarian missions to save many lives.
