The human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution”- At dawn, on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, the unfair death sentence of Arman Abdolali, who was 17 years old at the time of the alleged crime, was carried out in Rajai-Shahr Prison without the crime being proved and despite of many faults in the case.
Arman Abdolali’s execution was carried out while he did not have a fair trial, and he was forced to confess to the crime under torture which he had later retracted.
Arman Abdolali has been transferred to solitary confinement six times before to be executed and then returned to his ward, being severely and mercilessly tortured by this act.
While the authorities at RajaiShahr Prison had announced to Abdolali’s family yesterday evening that Arman’s death sentence would not be carried out and he had been returned to the ward, he was transferred to quarantine for the seventh time at 8 p.m. and was not even allowed to visit his family one last time.
Babak Paknia, the lawyer, tweeted that the sentence was carried out while according to several jurists the case has had many faults.
Amnesty International issued an urgent statement on Monday, November 1, 2021, after Arman Abdolali was transferred to solitary confinement for execution and demanded that this unfair sentence be halted.
Arman Abdolali was born on March 9, 1996 and was only 17 at the time of the alleged murder in 2013.
At the time of his detention, Arman was tortured in solitary confinement for 74 days to confess to the murder. Eventually he confessed under torture, but the victim’s body was never found, and Arman later retracted his confession, however, the Court of the First Instance issued a death sentence for Arman.
Arman Abdolali’s death sentence was scheduled to be carried out in 2019, but before the execution, Arman’s lawyer found that after Arman’s arrest, a leave had been permitted for Ghazaleh (the victim) and her insurance had been extended, so a retrial was requested.
With the evidence obtained, Arman was tried again at Branch 5 of the Criminal Court of Tehran province. Stating that he was not a murderer and that he did not know where the body was, Arman noted that Ghazaleh might be alive.
Finally, the judges of the Criminal Court of Tehran province consulted and found Arman guilty of murder and sentenced him to death. This unjust sentence was carried out in spite of all the flaws, contrary to all international law.
According to international independent human rights organizations and institutions, and based on the statistics of executions, the dictatorship of Velayat-e-Faqih in Iran is one of the few countries that condemns and executes juvenile offenders to the death penalty.
The human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution” calls for an international trial and punishment of the perpetrators of such inhumane sentences, and specifically holds the head of the Judiciary, Mohseni Eje’i, President Ebrahim Raisi, and Ali Khamenei, responsible for these crimes.”
