Political prisoner Mehran Qarehbaghi suffering a heart condition will be tried for a new case that has been filed against him in prison.
The human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution” reported on November 4, 2021: Political prisoner Mehran Qarehbaghi imprisoned in Behbahan Prison and suffering from a new heart condition which inflicts a poor physical condition on him is also facing trial for a new case filed against him by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) while confined at this prison. The court date is set for a new case against him and Mohammad Hossein Ansarifar in prison. The trial is scheduled to take place in November at a branch of Behbahan’s court.
The charge against political prisoner Mehran Qarebaghi in this case, which was recently opened by MOIS, is propaganda against the regime in prison and in favor of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (PMOI/MEK). Mohammad Hossein Ansarifar will be tried on the same charge too. On the other hand, Mehran Qarehbaghi has been diagnosed with heart valve disease due to stress and pressures he had undergone since his arrest, according to a reliable source. Mehran Qarabaghi has been in a state of limbo for nearly two years since his arrest and is continually under pressure from the Ministry of Intelligence.
On Monday, July 12, 2021, Mehran Qarehbaghi, along with Mohammad Hossein Ansarifar, were abruptly transferred from Behbahan Prison to Ahvaz intelligence detention center and interrogated. Intelligence agents filed a lawsuit against him to drag this political prisoner to court again. However, his previous case has not yet been closed and despite repeated transfers to court, he has been returned to prison without the sentence for his case being determined. Mahshahr’s court set bail of 3 billion Tomans for Mehran Qarehbaghi’s release until his case meets its end at court, but though this heavy bail was provided, the MOIS opposed his release and prevented it.
In order to put pressure on the prisoner’s family and to psychologically torture them, in Behbahan, intelligence agents told them that their son has been sentenced to death. They wanted his family to make Mehran to give up his beliefs before the official verdict was issued in court and to cooperate with MOIS and meet its demands.
Mehran Qarehbaghi was born in 1992 and is a resident of Sarhad Agha village in Behbahan county. He has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He was arrested on January 18, 2020, along with Majid Khademi, by IRGC intelligence agents and transferred to Behbahan Prison after about a month of interrogation.
On April 25, 2021, Mehran Qarehbaghi finally appeared in the Mahshahr Courthouse, presided over by Judge Afshoon, and was tried.
He was charged with “propaganda against the state, membership in the Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization (PMOI/MEK) and communicating with MEK news channels, participation in destruction and arson, participation in disturbing public order, participation in the manufacture of non-military incendiary materials, and committing corruption on earth.”
In his previous case, Mehran Qarehbaghi was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to three years in prison on charges of “insulting Khamenei and propaganda against the state”, two of which were executive.
Now the life of political prisoner Mehran Qarehbaghi, who is also suffering from heart disease and is under pressure from the Ministry of Intelligence, is at risk.
