Political prisoner, Afshin Ba’imani’s leave, after 22 years of confinement, was blocked by a heavy bail of a hundred billion Rials.
By appointing a bail of a hundred billion Rials (about 2,365,464 US $), the Judiciary practically prevented political prisoner, Afshin Ba’imani, sentenced to life-in-prison, to go on leave after being jailed for 22 years.
The human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution”, January 8, 2022- Political prisoner, Afshin Ba’imani, confined in Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj, was informed by a communique that if he wants a furlough, he must be bailed out on a hundred billion Rials. The communique was issued by branch No.7 of the Criminal Court No.2. Political prisoner Afshin Ba’imani did not accepted the decree and rejected the communique.
According to an informed source: “As the communique’s process shows, about 4 years ago, after being confined for 18 years in jail, the court issuing the decree, sentenced this prisoner to paying the blood money for 5.5 persons in a made-up case.”
The case was opened based on a complained filled by a person named, Fraidon Gashtasbi. He was incited by MOIS and security agents to ask for blood money as the plaintiff, after 18 years, then the sham trial was set up and Afshin Ba’imani was sentenced to paying the blood money for 5.5 persons.”
The source added: “It is interesting; how come after 18 years this person has filed a complaint? Why there was nobody and no complaint before this? The whole issue is a fake. Even if it is true, how much is the blood money for one person that a bail of a hundred billion Rials is appointed?”
About 23 years ago, the country’s judicial system opened a case against political prisoner Afshin Ba’imani and sentenced him to death. After six years, his death sentence was reduced by one degree to life imprisonment. Now, in order to prevent him from being sent to a leave, which is the legal right of every prisoner, a bail of 10 billion Tomans has been set for him.
The source concluded: “We hereby inform all political and human rights activists, the international community and the dear nation of Iran about the oppression imposed on this political prisoner who has spent 22 years in prison. May the tyranny of the judiciary of Velayat-e-Faqih and the non-observance of human rights be exposed.”
Who is political prisoner Afshin Ba’imani
Political prisoner Afshin Ba’imani is married and has two children. His whole family was detained on September 6, 2000, on charge of helping his brother, Mehdi Ba’imani, who was in connection with People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) to flee the county. Afshin was under torture and interrogation in cells of ward 209 of Evin Prison for months.
Then he was sentenced to death on charge of having connections with PMOI; the decree was upheld in the revision court. But after six years it was commuted to life imprisonment. He was transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj in 2009.
Political prisoner Afshin Ba’imani has had heart stroke twice but has been deprived of medical treatment and medical furloughs.
During his 22 years of imprisonment, he has been tortured, taken to solitary confinement, deprived of calls and visits, time and again.
Due to the tortures, he is losing his sight in his right eye. He is currently suffering from heart problems and kidney stones.
Mr. Ba’imani was suddenly taken to the IRGC ward of Rajai Shahr prison on January 18, 2015, along with political prisoner Arzhang Davoodi. After 41 days of solitary confinement and torture, he was taken to the ward of political prisoners: saloon 12 of ward 4.
In mid-summer of 2017 being viciously beaten, he and other political prisoners in Rajai Shahr Prison were taken by force to saloon 10 which had heavy security measures. In protests to this sudden transfer, they all went on hunger strike for 40 days which echoed in the world and enjoyed domestic and international supports.
In 2019, in the 20th year of his imprisonment, Afshin Ba’imani was sentenced in absentia to pay one billion and two hundred million tomans as care costs for an officer injured during the arrest of his brother. This sentence was carried out without a court hearing and without the presence of Mr. Ba’imani. He was orally notified.
On November 10, 2019, in protest to this case-making by Amin-Vaziri (the prosecutor’s representative and his deputy in political prisoners’ affairs), and Shah Mohammadi, the interrogator of branch No. 3 of Evin Prosecutor Office, and in protest to the fact that his request for a leave was denied, Mr. Ba’imani went on a hunger strike.
Recently, Branch 22 of the Public and Revolutionary Court of Tehran issued an order to confiscate Afshin Ba’imani’s land. On Saturday, May 30, 2020, officers returned to Mr. Ba’imani’s land in Ramhormoz, Khuzestan Province, with a confiscation order, but were met with resistance from his family and local residents.
During all these 22 years, his family have always been under pressure. In mid-winter of 2020, his daughter’s bank account was blocked on the order of branch No. 22 of the Revolutionary Court.
Now in the latest oppressive measure, the Judiciary has appointed a bail of 100 billion Rials to torture and harass this political prisoner.
Once again, the human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution” urges the international human rights organizations, European Parliament, Mrs. Bachelet the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights and Mr. Javaid Rehman, the Especial Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran to send an investigative humanitarian mission to visit Iran’s prisons. Life of the prisoners in general and political prisoners in particular, is at stake in Iran regime’s inhumane prisons.
