A great number of political prisoners in Urmia prison are injured, 20 taken to solitary confinement as punishment!
Being severely beaten by prison’s Special Guards Unit in their arbitrary transfer to a high security ward, a great number of political prisoners in Urmia prison have been injured and are hospitalized in prison’s infirmary, one of them in dire health condition.
According to the human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution” on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, credible reports from inside Urmia Central Prison have informed the center that after the savage raid by prison’s Special Guards Unit on political prisoners and their beatings to make them move to a high security ward, many of the political prisoners have been injured and 20 of them taken to solitary confinement as punishment!
Many of the injured are hospitalized at the prison’s infirmary, among them, political prisoners, Keyhan Mokaram is in dire health condition.
According to the reports, the prisoners were beaten under the supervision of the General Director of Prisons, and the Intelligence Directorate of the Urmia’s IRGC.
During the passed week, the new prison warden had threatened the political prisoners with executions and more pressure. It seems that this act was in the course of bringing about that threat.
It is worth mentioning that on Monday morning, January 10, 2022, the head of Urmia Central Prison, despite the promises he had previously made to political prisoners, forcibly acted to transfer them to a high-security ward. Facing the resistance of political prisoners, the Special Guards Unit interfered and transferred them by force to the new ward while savagely beating them.
On December 12, 2021, 47 political prisoners in Urmia Central Prison went on hunger strike to protest the order of the warden for their transfer to a new high security ward free from any facilities or enough space with CCTVs installed in every corner of it even in toilets and showers. After 12 days on hunger strike, following the promises made by the warden, they temporarily ended their hunger strike and announced that if these promises are not met, they will go on hunger strike again.
Once again, the human rights center of “No to Prison- No to Execution” strongly urges the international human rights organizations, European Parliament, Mrs. Bachelet the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights and Mr. Javaid Rehman, the Especial Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran to send an investigative humanitarian mission to visit Iran’s prisons. Life of the prisoners in general and political prisoners in particular, is at stake in Iran regime’s inhumane prisons.
Send a mission to Urmia Central Prison, visit these injured political prisoners, save their lives, hold the brutal Iran regime and its authorities accountable for their unleased violation of human rights, right now!
